Hi! First and foremost I'd like to thank and congratulate my friend – whoever he is – who has taken the initiative to bring together names and moments in this Blog for a reminiscence of those days in Tanjong Lobang College. Good job.

I'm Mohd Kassim Bin Kinchu from the Class of 1969 (Form 6). In this posting I’d like to share a memorable moment in 1969. That morning we were doing Physics Practical and our teacher was Mr Peterson, a Peace Corp volunteer. We were busy with the pendulum – counting the number of swings and timing the stop watch. I did notice that Mr Peterson, while conducting the practical class he kept going back in his room in the lab. I was not aware that something very important was happening on that very day. When the moment arrived, Mr Peterson called us in to listen to the radio. The US had successfully landed the first man on the moon. He was Neil Armstrong. We clapped sharing the joy of Mr Peterson.

At that moment I did not quite understand the hidden significance and relevance of the event; except that, what I knew was the US and RUSSIA were competing in the space exploration for political advantage. When I returned to Kuching for the term break I tried to share the news with my grandmother. She refuted saying it was all a mock up. Then it dawned upon me that the US had really done a miracle! They had achieved something that could not be imagined by an ordinary person. I started thinking what really made the journey to the moon possible. And the event had also instilled in me that we are one mankind. It was indeed; then: Neil Armstrong had made a gigantic step for mankind. We actually clapped with joy together with Mr Peterson.

And so was Tanjong Lobang College. That was where my worldview started to open up – learning from friends from all over Sarawak. The boarding life was coloured by our varied background and hence characters, but there was something common – the love and respect for Tanjong Lobang College, no matter what! It was Tanjong Lobang College all the way.
